Legionella poses a serious health risk.

Legionella are types of bacteria that live in groundwater and surface water. Both are processed to make drinking water, and so the rod bacteria end up in our drinking water in low concentrations. It only becomes problematic when the concentration of legionella increases excessively. The bacteria multiply rapidly in stagnant water or when the warm water is too cold and the cold water is too warm. Legionella multiply quickly in warm water at temperatures between 40°C and 45°C.

If Legionella bacteria are inhaled - for example when taking a shower through the steam - they can cause respiratory diseases. Legionella pneumophila is particularly dangerous as it causes Legionnaires' disease. In humans, this can manifest itself in pneumonia, fever, chills, a dry cough, and headaches and aching limbs.

Recent studies show that 16% of all drinking water systems in buildings in Germany have an excessively high concentration of legionella.

• Open the sample tube.
• Turn the tap all the way to “hot” and adjust the water jet to about the thickness of a pencil.
• Let the water run for about 10 seconds and then fill the sample container.
• Screw the cap tightly onto the sample tube so that no water can leak out.
• Now take the barcode label and stick it on the sample tube.
• To send the sample tube, place it in the enclosed shipping bag. Send it back to the laboratory immediately.
• You will receive the result by post within 3 days.
