A healthy intestinal flora is essential for infants and young children. It plays an important role in the maturation and activity of the immune system. An intact intestinal flora ensures a strong body defense.

On the one hand, the microbial colonization of the intestine supports the immunological development of the child, but on the other hand, the intestinal flora is exposed to sensitive disruptive influences, especially during the first 12 months of life. The intestinal flora of healthy breastfed children is in balance (homeostasis), with beneficial bifidobacteria typically dominating.

Furthermore, occasional traces of blood, for example in the form of blood fibres, can be observed in babies’ stools.
