  • A healthy intestinal flora is essential for infants and young children. It plays an important role in the maturation and activity of the immune system. An intact intestinal flora ensures a strong body defense.

On the one hand, the microbial colonization of the intestine supports the immunological development of the child, but on the other hand, the intestinal flora is exposed to sensitive disruptive influences, especially during the first 12 months of life. This can have an inhibiting effect on the establishment of a stable microecological environment.

The intestinal flora of healthy breastfed children is in balance (homeostasis), with beneficial bifidobacteria typically dominating.

If there is an imbalance (dysbiosis), potentially pathogenic germs such as clostridia can multiply. Dysbiosis in infancy is associated with various diseases later in life.

An imbalance in the intestinal flora can have many causes. Studies show that the intestinal flora of children born vaginally differs from that of those born by cesarean section. Early nutrition and the intake of breast milk also shape the baby's intestinal flora.

Furthermore, occasional traces of blood, for example in the form of blood fibres, can be observed in babies’ stools.
